Northwest Portland Real Estate
Overview
Northwest Portland starts next to downtown and moves Northwest along the beautiful riverfront between Forest Park, the largest urban natural forest reserve, and the Willamette river (map). Many of the Northwest Portland neighborhoods are referred to interchangeably as downtown Portland due to their proximity to the heart of the city.
Some of the most famous Northwest/Downtown neighborhoods include the Pearl District and Goose Hollow, both of which won awards as best places to retire in 2007 from Money Magazine.
Parks & Recreation
Numerous parks and plazas dot the Northwest Portland cityscape. The most popular park is almost certainly the Tom McCall Waterfront Park that provides a 29 acre waterfront promenade running directly along the Willamette river and is notable for having been built on the site of a former multilane expressway; in the summertime this park is variously home to a seasonal fair/amusement park and a farmer's market.
Another great destination is Forest Park, the largest municipal park in the nation, which defines the boundaries of Northwest Portland and offers residents over 5000 acres of natural beauty to explore in the form of hiking and equestrian trails and unique land features. Other notable parks include the pair of North Park Blocks and South Park Blocks which provide basketball courts, playgrounds, and walking paths in the heart of the city.
